Recording a demo CD.
Here’s what Scott Larson, voice actor/producer thinks of the Hudson Voice Technique.
We receive phone calls every day from people who have been told they have a good voice and should record a demo CD to start making money as a voiceover actor. The financial potential is enormous, but you can’t expect advertising agencies to pay you thousands of pounds just because you have a good voice. After all, I have ten fingers, but don’t ask me to play the violin!
As you know, we have created the world’s only technique for voiceovers, broadcasters, corporate presentations and autocue. It is our policy to only produce a voice-reel for those who have been trained in the Hudson Voice Technique or have attended stage school for two years; although excellent actors are not necessarily good voice-overs.
It would be easy for us to just take your money and record a demo CD, but that would be dishonest. Sadly, many studios do this.
Every actor or voiceover needs a professional producer. Most studios will offer you excellent equipment and experienced engineer. Even though most engineers are excellent, they are not qualified to direct an actor or voiceover actor.
Most recording studios will offer you second hand scripts. These may not suit your voice category and of course, they will have been used many times before. Your demo CD is your only contact with a producer and you want to be original so you have an edge over your competition.
Many companies in the UK and the USA offer to train and record a voice-reel for you. The problem is that none of them teach a communication technique to train you to become a professional voiceover. They give hints and tips, like what equipment to buy so you can record from home, some even tell you to bring an apple into the studio or a sharpened pencil! This of course does nothing for the actual art of recording a voiceover script.
Many so-called trainers tell you what to do, but not how to do it. Make sure you don’t waste your hard earned money.
